How Greenowatt collects, uses, and protects the small amount of information you share with us.

Last updated: July 24, 2026. We collect as little personal information as we can while still running a small editorial site, a weekly email newsletter, and a small amount of display advertising that helps keep Greenowatt free to read. This page is the long version of what that means in practice.

Who we are

This site (referred to throughout as “Greenowatt”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) is published at greenowatt.com. We are a small independent editorial team that writes beginner-friendly guides on solar, batteries, EVs, and home energy savings. Our writing process and editorial standards are documented in the editorial policy.

What we collect

1. Server request logs

When you visit any page on Greenowatt, our hosting provider logs basic request information that includes your IP address, the page requested, the date and time, the referring URL, and your browser user agent. We retain these logs for up to 30 days to spot abuse and debug technical issues.

2. Contact-form submissions

When you submit our contact form, we collect the name, email address, and message you provide. We use this information only to reply to you and to keep a record of the conversation. Contact-form submissions are never added to any newsletter list and are never shared with advertisers.

3. Newsletter subscriptions

When you subscribe to the Sunday brief, we collect the email address you provide and the timestamp of the subscription. We use that address only to send you the weekly note. You can unsubscribe with one click from the footer of any email.

4. Aggregate analytics

We use a privacy-respecting analytics tool to count page views in aggregate. The data tells us which articles are popular and how readers navigate the site, but it does not let us identify individual readers.

Cookies and similar technologies

Greenowatt itself sets only a small number of functional cookies (for things like remembering whether you have dismissed a notice). Third-party services we use, including advertising and analytics partners, may set their own cookies in your browser. You can clear cookies at any time through your browser settings. Disabling cookies entirely may affect how some parts of the site work.

Advertising

Greenowatt may display advertising provided by Google and other third-party ad networks. These advertising partners may use cookies, web beacons, device identifiers, and similar technologies to:

  • Limit how many times you see the same ad
  • Measure the effectiveness of advertising campaigns
  • Detect and prevent advertising fraud

Turning off personalized advertising does not stop ads from appearing on Greenowatt; it only changes how those ads are chosen. You may still see ads, but they will not be tailored to your inferred interests. Clearing cookies in your browser resets any advertising profiles tied to those cookies.

How long we keep your data

  • Server logs: up to 30 days

  • Analytics: aggregate data only, no individual retention

Your rights under GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA, and other data-protection laws

Depending on where you live, you have specific data-protection rights that apply to any personal information Greenowatt holds about you. Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK GDPR, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), and comparable frameworks in other regions, you have the right to:

  • Access: ask for a copy of any personal information we hold about you.
  • Rectify: ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
  • Erase: ask us to delete your information (also known as the right to be forgotten).
  • Restrict processing: ask us to pause certain processing while a dispute is resolved.
  • Object: object to the processing of your personal data for direct marketing or other purposes.
  • Portability: receive a copy of your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
  • Withdraw consent: withdraw consent for newsletter or contact-form processing at any time.
  • Opt out of “sale” or “sharing” (CCPA): California residents can request that we not “sell” or “share” their personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. Greenowatt does not sell personal information for money, but the CCPA’s definition of “sale” and “sharing” is broad enough to cover certain kinds of advertising cookies. You can opt out of personalized advertising with the tools listed in the previous section.
  • Non-discrimination: we will not deny you access to the site or degrade your experience for exercising these rights.
  • Lodge a complaint: file a complaint with your local data-protection authority (for example, the ICO in the UK, your national DPA in the EU, or the California Privacy Protection Agency in California).

Children’s privacy

Greenowatt is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If a parent or guardian believes we have, please email us and we will delete it.

Our articles link to outside sites for context. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their privacy practices. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any third-party site you visit.

Changes to this policy

We update this policy when our practices change. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page is changed whenever a meaningful update is made, and significant changes are mentioned in the next Sunday brief.
