What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. When you come back, the browser sends the file back to the site so it can remember something (whether you dismissed a banner, what your language preference is, whether you have already seen a specific ad). Cookies can be first-party (set by greenowatt.com) or third-party (set by services we embed, like an analytics tool or an ad network).

Category-by-category

1. Strictly necessary cookies

What they do: keep the site running. These are cookies that WordPress or our host sets to route your request, remember whether you have dismissed a cookie banner, or keep a logged-in editor session active.

Can you turn them off: no, because turning them off breaks the site. They do not track you across other websites.

Typical names: wordpress_test_cookie, wp-settings-*, gw_consent.

2. Functional cookies

What they do: remember preferences that make the site nicer to use, like whether you have dismissed a callout or which FAQ section you last had open.

Can you turn them off: yes. If you turn them off, the site keeps working; it just forgets your preferences between visits.

3. Analytics cookies

What they do: tell us in aggregate how many people visited a page, which articles are popular, and where our readers come from. They do not let us identify you personally.

Tools we currently use: Google Analytics via Google Site Kit, and Google Search Console.

4. Advertising cookies

What they do: let Google and other partners show ads that may be more relevant to you, cap how often you see the same ad, and measure whether an ad campaign is working. They can also detect and prevent ad fraud.

Tools we currently use: Google AdSense (once approved) and Google’s tag manager (gtag.js) for conversion tracking.

Your controls

You have several ways to control cookies on Greenowatt:

  • In your browser: every major browser lets you clear cookies, block third-party cookies, or set a “do not track” preference. Instructions for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge.
  • Google-specific: Google Ads Settings to turn personalized advertising on or off, and Google My Ad Center to fine-tune the brands and topics you want to see fewer ads about.
  • Industry-wide opt-outs: Digital Advertising Alliance (US and Canada), Your Online Choices (Europe), Network Advertising Initiative (US).
  • On this site: the cookie banner on your first visit stores your consent choice in a small first-party cookie. To change your choice later, use the “Cookie settings” link at the bottom of the footer.

Do Not Track

Some browsers send a “Do Not Track” (DNT) signal. Because there is no industry-wide agreement on what a website should do when it receives a DNT signal, Greenowatt currently follows the more concrete controls listed above. If a legally binding standard emerges, we will update this policy and this page.

Regional notes

EEA, UK, and Switzerland: once Greenowatt is approved for display advertising, we will route consent through a Google-certified Consent Management Platform (CMP) that shows visitors from these regions a compliant banner before any non-essential cookie is set. This page will be updated on the day that CMP goes live.

California: California residents can opt out of what CCPA/CPRA calls “sale” or “sharing” of personal information through the advertising personalization tools listed above. See the “Your rights” section of our privacy policy.

Changes to this policy

We update this page whenever we add, remove, or change the third-party services that set cookies on Greenowatt. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
