The first solar quote you receive is rarely the one you understand. It arrives as a PDF, usually 12 to 25 pages long, full of glossy renderings, a few tables packed with model numbers, and a price near the bottom that may or may not match what the salesperson said on the phone. Most homeowners flip to the price, squint at the equipment list, and sign something they have not really read. That is how small surprises become large ones two years later.

The good news is that almost every residential solar proposal in the United States follows the same structure. Once you learn that structure, comparing three quotes side by side becomes a matter of cross-checking numbers rather than translating jargon. The five sections below walk through what to expect, what each part is actually telling you, and which questions to ask before you sign anything.

What a typical quote actually contains

A residential solar proposal is essentially a sales document wrapped around a technical specification and a contract. The order varies by installer, but the contents are remarkably consistent. If you know what to expect, you can flip to any section in under a minute.

Here is the typical page-by-page tour you will see from most reputable companies:

  • Cover page (1 page). Your name, address, system size in kilowatts, and the proposal date. Check the address. Typos here can delay permitting later.
  • Site analysis (2 to 4 pages). Satellite image of your roof with proposed panel layout, shading study, and an annual sun-hour estimate.
  • System specification (1 to 3 pages). Panel make and model, panel count, inverter type and quantity, mounting hardware, monitoring system.
  • Production estimate (1 to 2 pages). A table or graph of expected kilowatt-hours per month, usually with a small derate factor applied for real-world losses.
  • Financial summary (2 to 4 pages). System price, incentives, net cost, financing options if applicable, projected savings over 20 or 25 years.
  • Equipment data sheets (3 to 8 pages). Manufacturer spec sheets for the panels, inverters, and racking. Often pulled directly from the vendor website.
  • Warranty summary (1 to 2 pages). Panel warranty, inverter warranty, workmanship warranty, and any production guarantee.
  • Terms and conditions (4 to 10 pages). The legal contract. This is where cancellation rights, payment schedule, lien language, and dispute resolution live.

Two pieces of advice before you flip past the cover. First, read the document on a desktop or printed out, not on a phone. The shading studies and panel layouts are tiny on a phone screen and easy to misread. Second, do not skip the data sheets just because they look like vendor marketing. They tell you the exact warranty class of your panel and the temperature coefficient, both of which matter for long-term performance.

The system spec section: what to verify

This is the heart of the quote, and the page you will return to most often when comparing proposals. The system spec tells you what hardware is actually going on your roof. If any of these numbers are missing or vague, that is your first signal to ask follow-up questions before going further.

Five items deserve a close read:

  • Panel make and model. Look for a full name like “Q CELLS Q.PEAK DUO BLK ML-G10+ 400” rather than just “400W mono panel.” The full model number lets you look up independent reviews and the actual warranty certificate.
  • Panel wattage. Most residential panels in 2025 and 2026 fall between 380 and 450 watts. Higher is not automatically better. A 400W panel from a top-tier manufacturer often outperforms a 440W panel from a lesser-known brand over 25 years.
  • Inverter type, model, and count. String inverter, microinverters, or DC optimizers. Each has tradeoffs. A single string inverter is cheapest. Microinverters add about 10 to 20 percent to the price but handle partial shade better. Confirm the inverter count matches the panel count if microinverters are used.
  • Panel count and total DC size. Multiply panel count by wattage and divide by 1,000 to get the DC system size in kilowatts. If the proposal says 8.4 kW DC but the math gives 8.0 kW, ask why. Sometimes it is a rounding choice, sometimes it is a typo.
  • Tilt and azimuth. Tilt is the roof angle, azimuth is the direction the panels face. A south-facing roof at 25 to 35 degrees in most of the US is the production gold standard. East or west facing will produce 10 to 20 percent less. The proposal should show both numbers explicitly.

The pricing section: what’s bundled, what’s add-on

Pricing is where two quotes for the same house can look wildly different until you decode what each one actually includes. The total at the bottom is almost meaningless on its own. What matters is the line-item breakdown, and whether key items are bundled into the system price or treated as separate add-ons.

A complete residential quote in the US typically bundles the following into one number:

  • All panels, inverters, racking, wiring, and conduit
  • Labor for installation
  • Engineering and structural assessment
  • Permits and permit runner fees
  • Utility interconnection application
  • Monitoring hardware and first-year monitoring service
  • Workmanship warranty

The items that are commonly separate, and which can add real money if you do not catch them, include:

  • Main service panel upgrade. If your home has a 100-amp panel and the new system pushes you over capacity, an upgrade to 200 amps typically runs 2,500 to 5,000 USD. Some installers include this in the base price, many do not.
  • Roof repair or reinforcement. Old shingles, sagging rafters, or skylight relocations often surface during the site visit and may be quoted separately.
  • Tree trimming or removal. Almost never included. Get a separate arborist quote if shading is an issue.
  • Battery storage. Sometimes shown as a “future option” on the proposal but not part of the priced system. A 10 to 15 kWh battery adds roughly 10,000 to 16,000 USD installed.
  • Critter guard or squirrel screen. A wire mesh around panel edges. Often a 300 to 800 USD add-on, but worth it if you have wildlife pressure.
  • Sales tax. In some states, equipment is exempt. In others, you will see a separate tax line.

The most useful single number for cross-quote comparison is the price per watt installed, before incentives. Divide the cash price by the system size in watts (so a 28,000 USD system at 8,400 watts is 3.33 USD per watt). US residential averages for 2025 sit roughly between 2.75 and 3.75 USD per watt. If one quote is at 4.20 and the others are at 3.10, the higher one should be able to explain what you are getting for the extra dollar per watt.

The warranty/legal section: what to circle and ask about

The warranty pages tell you what happens when something fails. Solar systems are largely solid-state and have few moving parts, but inverters do wear out, panels can degrade faster than expected, and roof penetrations occasionally leak. The warranty is your protection for all three.

Three separate warranties matter, and they almost never align on the same end date:

  • Panel product warranty. Covers manufacturing defects. Industry standard is 12 years from major brands, with top-tier manufacturers offering 25 years. Circle the number on the data sheet.
  • Panel performance warranty. Guarantees a minimum output after 25 years, typically 84 to 92 percent of the original rating. The higher the end-of-warranty percentage, the better the panel.
  • Inverter warranty. String inverters typically carry 10 to 12 years, with paid extensions available. Microinverters from Enphase and similar brands often carry 25 years standard.
  • Workmanship warranty. Covers labor and roof penetrations. This one varies the most, from a low of 2 years up to 25 years from the more premium installers. Ten years is a reasonable middle.

In the terms and conditions, circle these four items specifically: the cancellation window (federal law gives you 3 business days, but state laws sometimes extend this), the deposit forfeiture amount if you cancel after the window, the payment schedule with named milestones (avoid contracts that demand more than 10 percent upfront), and any production guarantee with the exact kWh number written out. A production guarantee that says “estimated” rather than “guaranteed” is marketing, not protection.

Red flags that should slow you down

Most installers in 2026 are honest and competent. A small number are not, and the patterns are usually visible in the quote itself if you know where to look. None of the items below automatically means walk away, but each one warrants a slow, written follow-up before you sign.

  • Pressure tactics. “This price is only good if you sign today” is the single biggest red flag in the industry. Real federal and state incentives have multi-month windows, not 24-hour ones.
  • Missing model numbers. If the panel is described only as “premium tier-1 monocrystalline” without a brand or model, the installer may be reserving the right to substitute lower-quality equipment after you sign.
  • Production estimates without a derate factor. Real-world output is 75 to 85 percent of theoretical peak. A proposal showing the theoretical number as the “annual estimate” is misleading.
  • Lump-sum payment upfront. Reputable installers tie payments to milestones (signing, permits issued, equipment delivered, install complete, system energized). Demanding 50 percent or more upfront before any work begins is unusual.
  • Workmanship warranty under 5 years. A short workmanship warranty often signals an installer who does not expect to be around in a decade.
  • No mention of net metering rules or interconnection process. These vary by utility and state. A proposal that ignores them entirely is not complete.
  • Vague language around dealer fees in financed deals. If the cash price and financed price look identical, the dealer fee is almost certainly hidden inside the system price.

One of the most useful habits when reviewing quotes is to wait 48 hours after the initial sales meeting before forming an opinion. The excitement of the pitch fades, the document starts to look like a document again, and the parts that did not make sense the first time become clearer. Check three things. First, how long the installer has been in business under the current name. A 25-year warranty from a 3-year-old company is worth less than 10 years from a 20-year company. Second, whether the warranty is transferable if you sell the house. Third, whether it is backed by a third-party warranty insurer. Some installers now offer manufacturer-backed workmanship coverage that survives the installer going out of business.


What if one quote is 30 percent cheaper than the other two?

Look at the equipment first, not the labor. Lower-cost quotes often use less-known panel brands, a single string inverter instead of microinverters, or budget racking hardware. Sometimes the cheaper system is genuinely a good value. Other times the long-term cost (a shorter warranty, faster panel degradation, or a difficult-to-reach manufacturer) erases the savings. Ask the cheap installer specifically what was cut to reach that price.


Can I negotiate the price on a solar quote?

Yes, especially after you have three quotes in hand. Showing a competing proposal often unlocks a 5 to 10 percent discount or an equipment upgrade at no extra cost. Polite, specific requests work best: “Quote B is 2,000 USD lower for the same panel and inverter.
