How to Plan Your First EV Road Trip Realistically

Last winter I mapped a 340-mile trip from Portland to a friend’s place near Bend, and my first plan had me arriving with 4% battery on a night forecast to hit 22°F. I redrew it three times before I felt calm. That process, the redrawing, is really what first EV road trips are about, and once you understand the rhythm, the anxiety drops fast.

Start with two apps, not one

I use PlugShare and A Better Route Planner (ABRP) together, and I’ve stopped trusting either one alone. PlugShare shows me user check-ins from the last week or two, which is how I learn a stall has been down since Tuesday even though the operator’s dashboard still shows it “available.” ABRP does the actual routing math: it accounts for elevation, speed, weather, and my specific car’s efficiency curve.

For station data at the federal level, the DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center station locator is worth cross-referencing before a long trip because it flags network, plug type, and operating hours in one place. I’ll usually confirm anything remote there before I commit.

Why I aim for 80%, not 100%

DC fast charging slows dramatically past about 80% state of charge. On my old Chevy Bolt, going from 10% to 80% took roughly 45 minutes, and going from 80% to 100% took another 45. That last chunk is nearly free time you’re giving away. Unless the next charger is farther than my remaining range at 80%, I unplug and go.

The other reason is heat. Lithium cells do not love sitting at 100% in a hot parking lot, and repeated 100% fast charges accelerate degradation over years. For a two-day trip, I’d rather arrive at 25% and plug into a Level 2 overnight at the hotel.

Build the route in ABRP first

Here’s the ordered flow I use, in the order I actually tap through it:

  1. Enter my starting state of charge honestly, including any cold-soak losses.
  2. Set arrival SoC to 15% minimum. That’s my emotional floor.
  3. Set reference speed 3-5 mph over the posted limit, because that’s what I actually drive.
  4. Toggle in the real weather forecast for departure day, not ABRP’s default.
  5. Filter chargers to 150 kW or faster on any highway leg over 200 miles.
  6. Let ABRP suggest stops, then open PlugShare and read the last 10 check-ins at each one.
  7. Swap any station with recent bad reviews for the next-nearest option.

That workflow takes me maybe 20 minutes for a five-hour drive, and it has saved me hours of on-road troubleshooting.

Cold weather math I wish I’d known sooner

Cold reduces EV range in two ways at once. The battery itself delivers less energy when its cells are below about 40°F, and the cabin heater pulls real power, roughly 2-6 kW depending on how hard it’s working. On my Bolt in December, I’ll plan for about 25-30% less range than the EPA sticker. Research from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory puts typical winter range loss in the 20-40% band across most current EVs, which lines up with what I see on the road.

Two habits help:

  • Precondition the battery while still plugged in at home, ideally 20-30 minutes before departure.
  • Precondition again on the last 15-20 minutes of highway driving before a fast charger, so the battery accepts full power on arrival.

Newer cars with heat pumps (most 2022-and-later models from Hyundai, Kia, Tesla, and Ford) handle winter better, but no EV is immune to physics.

Combine meals and charges

My single favorite planning trick: I only pick DC fast chargers that sit within a two-minute walk of real food. Not a vending machine. Real food. That way a 25-minute charge feels like a lunch break, not a hostage negotiation.

Electrify America locations at Walmart parking lots often work well here because there’s a bathroom, a coffee kiosk, and usually a taco truck or two nearby. EVgo sites at grocery stores like Fred Meyer (our Pacific Northwest chain) let me pick up dinner ingredients while I wait. If the only charger on a stretch is behind a locked gate at a car dealership after hours, I pick a different stretch.

Always know your backup station

Before I leave any charger, I identify two more stations ahead: the one ABRP wants me to hit next, and a second one either before or after it that I could reach on the same battery. If the primary is broken, occupied by three cars in line, or offline, the backup is already in my head. This is the single most important habit I’ve built.

The DOE tracked more than 61,000 public DC fast charging ports in the US as of early 2025, but they cluster along major corridors. Off the interstates, the two-station rule sometimes means a 20-mile detour. I’d rather detour 20 miles than sit.

What to do when the station is broken

It will happen. My rough sequence when I roll up to a dead stall:

  1. Try a different stall at the same site. Screens can be dead per-stall.
  2. Unplug, wait 30 seconds, plug in again. This resets the handshake surprisingly often.
  3. Try initiating the session from the network app instead of the credit card reader.
  4. Call the phone number printed on the unit itself, not the one in the app. Real humans can sometimes reset a stall remotely.
  5. If nothing works within 10 minutes, leave for the backup station.

I keep a Level 2 J1772 cable in the trunk as a last-resort option, because RV parks, campgrounds, and some hotels have 240V outlets I can politely ask to use. It won’t fast-charge, but roughly 20 miles of range per hour beats being stranded.

A worked example: Portland to Bend

The drive is about 165 miles, mostly two-lane through the Mount Hood corridor with a 4,000-foot climb. In summer, my 259-mile-rated Bolt does it on one charge with margin to spare. In winter, with the heater on and snow tires that eat a few percent of efficiency, I plan a single stop in Government Camp or Madras, aim to arrive there around 25% SoC, add about 30 minutes to reach 75%, and roll into Bend at roughly 20%. Total added time versus a gas car: about 30 minutes on a 3.5-hour drive. That is genuinely all it costs me.

The mental part

First-time range anxiety usually shows up around 40% SoC and gets loud at 20%. I’ve learned to trust the car’s own guess-o-meter more than my gut, because my gut always thinks I have less battery than I do. I watch the miles-per-kWh readout instead of the percentage, breathe, and remember that 15% arrival is not an emergency. It’s the plan.

The first trip is the hardest. By trip three, I promise, the route planning feels routine, and you’ll start noticing what a strange amount of your old life was spent standing next to a gas pump.

In 2024-2025 I’ve been paying roughly $0.36 to $0.56 per kWh on Electrify America and EVgo depending on the state and time of day, which works out to about $15 to $25 for a 30 to 45 kWh top-up. Off-peak rates and network memberships (like EVgo Rewards or EA Pass+) can shave 15-25% off that. Home charging still runs me about a quarter of the public price.


What if my car uses NACS and the station only has CCS (or vice versa)?

Most current EVs are shipping with adapters or will have them available through 2025. Tesla vehicles came with a J1772 adapter for years, and non-Tesla EVs are getting NACS adapters as manufacturers open access to the Supercharger network. Always throw the adapter in the trunk before a road trip because you cannot buy one at 11 pm in a rural gas station.


Do I need to install every charging network's app before I leave?

I install the big three (Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint) and Tesla if my car can use Superchargers. Plug and Charge or contactless credit card readers cover most sessions now, but the app usually gets you the best rate and lets you start a session when the card reader is glitchy. Set up payment before you leave home, not while standing in the rain.


How do I find chargers if I lose cell service on a remote stretch?

Download offline PlugShare maps for your route before departure, and screenshot your ABRP plan including addresses and network names for each stop. Most charger card readers work without your phone if you tap a credit card, so the real risk is not finding the station, not paying at it. I also keep the AAA roadside app installed because they will bring a portable Level 2 charger in a growing number of markets.


Is it safe to charge to 100% before a big trip?

Occasionally, yes. A single 100% charge before a long drive is fine on any modern EV, and it’s actually recommended by most manufacturers when you genuinely need the range. What you want to avoid is habitually leaving the car sitting at 100% in hot conditions, or repeatedly fast-charging past 80% on daily errands. Charge to 100% the night before departure, then leave first thing in the morning.
